In Reply to: Dude, the block will be fine. Just true up the cylinders, hone them properly. Use your forged pistons and rods (not factory rods at that HP level). Don't lean out. Don't run high boost for an hour straight at 7,000 RPM. Dan: Stock cast pistons won't like that much boost, he needs forged. n/m posted by Kaleb on June 13, 2002 at 01:17:29:
: : His personal, professional, opinion was that I should just change the rings, stick to stock pistons and go for 12 PSI boost. The main reason being the cylinder walls measured in about 4 mils thick. This means at the higher levels of horsepower, the cylinder bores are far more prone to barrelling (deforming from their perfect circular form). We could throw in cylinder sleeves, but the spacing between them is not generous enough and that would create more issues in other areas of the motor. We could fill the cooling sections with epoxy but that then means there go my hopes of using it as an everyday driver. : : Given the other Z31 guys who have been driving such monsters, including the likes of Morgan and so on, I've decided to go against his advice and still go for 500hp. At the end of the day, if the supercomponents I'll be throwing into this egg crate for a block cause a lot of blow-by later, out comes the motor, place components into a new block and away we go. : : What do you guys think? Don't tell me to cryotreat it because if there's one thing I can't afford to do is send out a piece of cast iron to Hekimian which will cost me shitloads to ship! : : Suggestions?
: : I've spoken to my rebuilder. He finally measured up everything. The head is showing about 3 mils of wear. The block, as explained before, no more than 1 mil of wear.
