Problem: Tranny related. Shifts perfect, fluid is at the right level and correct color. ONly happens when car is warm and has been driving on the highway for a good length of time. The problem is, when accelerating through the gears, most pronounced in 2nd and 3rd and from 2800-3500rpm, there is this kind of whooooshing sound from the tranny. It still shifts fine and everything though. It feels like the car has lost a bit of power too when making this noise, but unsure. That's all I can give you, besides that the front differential is located in the tranny itself (it has two halfshafts out the sides and a driveshaft out the back) Also, there is an oil leak somewhere near the rear of the engine that seems to be tied in with this noise but I'm unsure. It's a tiny leak, but what sucks is that it drips down onto the exhaust, burns, smells and smokes a bit! Again, mostly after driving on the highway for an hour or more. Hopefully not leaning toward a tranny rebuild here, these units are known to go bad every now and then. Perhaps torque converter related? Maybe my mom's mechanic screwed up somehow when he replaced the engine since the TC has to come out.... hmmm
Nope, not a WRX or such, it's my girlfriend's '90 Legacy wagon with automatic tranny and AWD. 132K miles, blah blah, owned since new by my mom. Mom overheated it and warped the heads at around 125K and a pristine junkyard engine was installed. Runs perfect. Car has been serviced by the dealer solely since new ($$$ at times). New radiator after overheat, and inline tranny filter has been installed since new (not factory installed on some earlier Legacys)
